midnight was made to blend jungle, club, dance, and jerk rap sounds into a new and cohesive sound. later, it turned into an experiment into creating a physical album that you can experience on your phone via NFC mini CDs, and expanded to include a mixtape using some of my favorite beats from the past year.
it's part of my ongoing work on finding a new way for artists to distribute their music in a way that provides them artistic freedom, reflects their music in a way that Spotify and others can't, and pays them more fairly than record labels or streaming services while still making the music free for anybody that wants it.
thank you for your support and encouragement – it means a lot, because most of this work is done on my own.
because a big part of this experiment is to get artists paid more fairly for their work, i wanted to break down how my pricing for this project works.
instead of hosting the album and selling it on bandcamp, i wanted to use
stripe to avoid bandcamp's 10-15% fee for selling things on their platform. stripe takes a fraction of that and makes the checkout process extremely simple, meaning I can keep more of the money for me and my collaborators.
when you purchase a mini CD necklace for $20, here's how that money gets distributed:
- $5 for the mini CD itself
- $7 for the stainless steel chain
- $1 for Stripe processing fees
- $7 for my collaborators and i
even though these margins seem small, they're much higher than we could earn on Spotify or other streaming platforms. for us to make that same $7-ish dollars on Spotify, you would have to listen to every song on the album about 350 times.
